Based on the popular children's books by Ole Lund Kirkegaard, The Open Air Museum in Copenhagen have created a fantastic universe for kids to dive deeper into the stories and meet the characters, they know so well. "Frøsnapperbyen" is essentially a kids-size town within the huge museum grounds, complete with its own bakery and shops inspired by the iconic tales of Kirkegaard.
As part of the 18.000 m2 large children's area, we were recruited to create 3 playful areas, that would help bring the stories to life.
This resulted in Mrs Madsen's tall house complete with tube slide and functioning telescope, a canon slide and a forest climbing course.
All elements are designed with organic, flowing shapes and lines in a style that matches the aesthetic of the original handdrawn illustrations of the books.

Mrs Madsens house towers over a huge maze full of fun challenges and different routes.

Take the tube slide down and see what part of the maze you end up in!

The telescope is a fun interactive feature at the top of the tower.

The stories and illustrations of Ole Lund Kirkegaard are iconic in Denmark and most kids and adults know and love the tales of adventure, mishaps and mischievous antics that Kirkegaard tells. These stories and illustrations are the inspiration for the design of the playground areas.
